Question and Answer
How long Dental Implant last?
You’ve probably heard that dental implants can last for 25 years or more. This is true as long as you properly care for them. It is important to note that the longevity of your dental implant is determined by several factors, including:
- Your oral exercises. How you care for and maintain your dental implant, such as brushing and flossing at least twice daily and visiting the dentist biannually, will affect how long it lasts.
- What you do with your teeth. Chewing or biting hard on hard items, as well as opening the crown cork with your teeth, will shorten the life of your implant.
- How knowledgeable the dentist who handled the implant is. Your dental implant will last longer if it is performed by a well-trained and experienced dentist. This is due to the fact that professional dentists understand how to precisely place the implant, evaluate the osseous integration progress, and determine if your jawbone has completely fused with the implant.
- The position of the implant. The placement of your dental implant in your mouth will also influence its longevity. For insurance purposes, implants placed in the back of the mouth will experience more pressure from chewing than those placed in the front. As a result, implants placed in the back of the mouth may fail sooner than those placed in the front.
- Your overall oral health and way of life. Patients who smoke or drink heavily are more likely than non-smokers and non-drinkers to have implant failure. As a result, to ensure that your dental implant lasts as long as possible, avoid smoking and drinking heavily before and after the implant is placed.
